Police The Riverwoods Police Department was created in October 2001. It is staffed by 7 full-time and 4 part-time State of Illinois certified police officers. In addition to sworn police personnel, the Department employs two part-time Records Administrators. The Department is committed to providing the highest level of service to the Residents. The Department is a member of the Northern Illinois Police Crime Laboratory, Northern Illinois Police Alarm System and the Lake County Major Crimes Task Force. It has intergovernmental agreements with local, state and federal law enforcement agencies. The Riverwoods Police Department provides a wide range of law enforcement services, including, but not limited to: 24-hour preventative patrols, emergency response, traffic and parking enforcement, criminal and juvenile investigations, illegal drug and alcohol enforcement, and limited animal control assistance. The Police Department provides assistance to persons locked out of their houses or vehicles. The house watch program provides that Residents that are leaving town may call the Police Department, and register their absence. The Department will request some limited information and will provide extra patrol and physically check the residence while it is vacant. Police Report Emergency Responses: As emergency vehicles respond, having your street address visible during the day and night can assist them in their rapid response. Often times, persons only have the address on one side of their mailbox. The vehicle may be responding from either direction. The address should be clearly visible from both directions. There are still many residents who do not have their addresses properly marked. Curfew: Curfew applies to anyone under the age of 18. Curfew is enforced from 11p.m. until 6a.m. Sunday through Thursday. On Friday and Saturday night it is from 12:01a.m. until 6a.m. Persons under the age of 18, not accompanied by a parent or guardian, are prohibited from being in public or in an establishment (business, restaurant, etc.) during these hours. The parent and youth may be charged with the offense. There are very few exceptions to this ordinance. Unsolicited Workers: Be careful about letting people on your property. Offenders have been known to offer unsolicited work (driveway sealing, tree cutting, etc) or claim to represent an organization, in order to gain entry into houses. If you have any questions, don't hesitate to call the Riverwoods Police Department. Peddlers and solicitors for funds generally must have a valid Village of Riverwoods permit displayed. Road Safety: Motorists, bicyclists, joggers, and walkers all share our roadways. Please exercise courtesy and care. Bicyclists, joggers and walkers should all wear reflective or at least light color clothing. Many recommend that all bicyclists, regardless of age, wear safety helmets. Farewell: It is anticipated that this will be my last Village Voice article. Please welcome the new Chief. Please be safe. Thank you for everything.
